DISCOVER GEORGIA - Helen

It's been a while since I've done a Discover Georgia post, hasn't it? A lot of people seem to believe that Georgia begins and ends with Atlanta, without seeing the many other interesting parts of the Peach State. I've shared a few of these posts already and hope to do more very soon. I have an outing planned for this Wednesday actually. Anyways, on to today's post on HELEN, Georgia.

Helen is a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, and is styled in a Bavarian setting, so that you get a dose of small-town Germany charm. As of 2010, Helen boasted a population of 510 people. Yes, you read that right - it's just one zero. Five Hundred and Ten people. Formerly a town that depended on logging, now it's biggest attraction is tourism, and Helen is the third most visited town in Georgia!

Helen can get packed with tourists, as lots of different events and festivals are held throughout the year. I actually intended to attend their Hot Air Balloon Festival earlier in the year (kinda like the one from this post), but we had just returned from our UK Family Holiday and I was exhausted. They also have Oktoberfest, which is a big German beer festival, during the later months of the year.

Helen's sister city is Fussen in Bavaria, Germany. Sister cities were formed to foster friendship and understanding between cultures across the world. It's also meant to promote business links, cultural and commercial ties.

FUN FACT: Atlanta and Lagos are sister cities!!!!!!!! 

The main reason why my siblings, Cakes and I went there was actually to go tubing. Tubing is a popular adventure-type activity that's very popular in the summer. The Chattahoochee River runs through Helen (it's a very long river), so there are a few companies that own tubing and other river attractions in the town. 

We actually went tubing, but of course I wasn't trying to carry my non-waterproof camera along. And it's a good thing too, because my phone was literally soaked in water - thank God for the waterproof Samsung 7 Edge mehn! 

After tubing, we were all so hungry and stopped by Bigg Daddy's Restaurant and Tavern. It's rated 5th out of 44 restaurants on Trip Advisor. You guys know I like to use Trip Advisor whenever I travel to find out the best places to eat - like here, when I met Kacheetee (who I've also done a blog collaboration with).

We ordered fish tacos (remember the salmon taco I had at this event?), and also chicken wings. I can't remember what flavors we ordered but they were soooooooooooo good!

I also got a Mac Daddy burger that was delicious, but way too big. I packed up half of it to take home, but unfortunately forgot to take it into the car :(

We also popped into an ice cream shop (I know, waaay too much food), and I loved the retro posters they had in there.

After ice cream, we drove to see the Anna Ruby Falls, as I wanted to see a waterfall. I don't think I've seen a proper waterfalls before.

The climb wasn't all too bad, although it was steep at times, and I regretted not having my inhaler with me - I used to be asthmatic, and every now and then I need to get a quick puff to help my breathing.

Anna Ruby Falls is located in the middle of the Chattahoochee National Forest.

I hope you've enjoyed my little presentation on Helen, Georgia and may inclined to visit if you have the time. If time and money permit me, I have half a mind to have a weekend getaway with Cakes around Christmas time. We'll see.
