Teal Gele and Pink Lace

Hola!

I'm slowly counting down, re: my big news from yesterday. Because of the changes coming very soon, it's making me a little nostalgic for having custom-made outfits courtesy of Nigerian tailors. In the States, having a simple ankara dress made for you can run from $80 and above. Seriously, take a look at some designers that sell ankara clothes abroad, and you'll see a simple pencil skirt for $100 +! Having tailors at cheaper prices here is something that I'll definitely miss.

Anyways, before the tears start, let's go ahead with this post. Over the weekend, Cakes' friend got married and the pink lace asoebi came with a teal gele. As I mentioned in this post, I don't like to wear geles, so I asked my tailor to turn it into a top.

I got LOTS of compliments on the outfit - someone said I looked very different from everybody else *blushes*

Okay, I have to confess that I allowed everyone to believe this was my hair. In my defense, all they said was "Oh I love your hair. Your hair is so pretty! How long have you been natural? 10 years, wow! So beautiful!" All I said in response was, "Thank you." I didn't lie about anything, did I? :D

My friend got me this necklace so many years ago, and it's one of my most favorite pieces of jewelry ever!

Have I told you guys that my new favorite lipstick is by Zaron Cosmetics?

I got a little naughty at a point and marked my boyfriend.

I really like the detail of this material, and I'm glad I didn't wear it as a gele.

It WAS a little firm, but that didn't stop me from dancing a lot :D If you follow me on Snapchat, you would have seen all the dancing... so follow me now - BerryDakara.

I also posted some videos of dancing and twirling on Instagram - also BerryDakara.

A fun time was had, even though I was late - I had to attend the My 2016 Goals Workshop beforehand and it started/ran late.

I hope you have a lovely rest of the week!

Oh, and this is the cake Cakes made by the way.

  1. Beautiful as usual. Arh, I have suddenly fallen in love with Zaron cosmetics too. I love their mascara and lip stain. I wish all local(Nigerian) manufacturers can produce quality stuffs so that we can buy naija to grow our naira.

    1. Thanks Amaka. I haven't tried their mascara. I use the powder and foundation, among a few other things. Yes to quality!

  2. I luv dat ur tailor was creative enough to make d gele into a top, but I think I would have preferred only d color of d lace as a gown on u then d gele as a purse or shoe?, dunno!u would have looked sweeter& more "wedding guestish"

    1. I actually made tops with the pink material, but the contrast of the gele top looked nicer. I'm sure I'll still wear the full lace outfit at some point.

  7. Love the combo! Nice one on turning the gene into something you can actually use. I've got a number of them just lying down not being used.

    1. That was my issue too! I had soooo many at one point, I considered just throwing them away. But like Anonymous suggested above, why not try making them into purses or shoes (I dunno how)

  10. Gele as top, really creative.
    Cute outfit altogether :)
Reminds me of a skirt I made once with Damask.
It was a little stiff, but always noticed whenever I wore it.

    1. I like things that are different. I'm sure the damask skirt was fierce!

  11. Hi Berry,

Refashioning the gele fabric that way was a brilliant idea. I love the elegant silhouette of the maxi skirt. Fuchsia is my favourite shade of pink, it is such a confident hue. You look lovely.

Biko, did you say $100 for a simple pencil skirt? Chai! Is this God's way of telling me to relocate to "The Abroad". I will sew pencil skirts all day, err day for $100 considering the current exchange rate. :-) Lol
