The 3 reasons NOT to have "Our" Song

Hey yo homies yo yo!

You guys know I like to give you Dating and Relationships Advice every now and then (e.g. Why Pet Names are Bad, Reasons to get Married, the Best Time to Break Up - which is around now btw).

So here I am listening to me and Cakes' song on my phone. I always like listening to it on the highest volume because it just evokes the passion in the song. I don't know if I told you, but a couple of weeks before our wedding, we had no clue what we wanted to dance to for our First Dance. I wanted Michael Jackson (wait, don't laugh... he has a very nice love song called "I Just Can't Stop Loving You"), and he wanted boring K-Ci and Jojo (nuh uh, the whole world has danced to their songs). I wanted a song that was beautiful, passionate, AND A DUET! (Sometimes I take this Girl Power stuff to the extreme :p) Anyways, we just couldn't agree on a song for a while. I mean, Cakes would say "yeah okay" to some of my choices, but I could just tell he wasn't really into them. I wanted our wedding to be OUR wedding, so I really wanted his input on a lot of things. Less than a month to the wedding... in fact, it was maybe 2 or 3 weeks to the wedding, we watched The Best Man Holiday, and in the funeral scene (where I didn't cry - clap for me) the most gorgeous song was featured: As by Marsha Ambrosius and Anthony Hamilton. It's a remake of an equally fun song, Always by Steve Wonder. I knew that THAT was our song immediately (although sha, shortly afterward my other husband Johnny aka John Legend almost made us change our minds with All of Me).

Okay, what does all this have to do with the title of this post? Well, let me tell you...

Good morning Mr. Speaker, Panel of Judges, Accurate Time Keeper, Co-debaters, and esteemed audience. I am here to oppose the motion that "All Couples Should have Our Song."

  1. You might break up.
Obviously you're not breaking up because of a song. But imagine after being in a relationship for however long, having a song, and then breaking up - how on earth will you ever listen to that song again?!?!?!? Do you know how annoyed I am that I can't enjoy Musiq Soulchild's music because of my ex?! I mean, it wasn't our song, but the guy just played, replayed and overplayed Musiq's album so much that I hated him. But there are other songs that when I hear them, remind me of one guy or another. No bueno! Save the OUR SONG for AFTER you get engaged (God willing, you make it down the aisle and stay together).

However please note that having our song as a married person means that...
  2. You will forever and ever have that picture of you crying while singing said song on your wedding day. Case in point :(
    first dance, wedding, bride
  3. Your husband will use it to blackmail you into making up during a fight.
Yes. Cakes uses this as his weapon when we fight sometimes. I'll be so mad at something, and then the next thing I hear is "Alwaaaaaaays, Alwaaaaaaaaaaaays, Alwaaaaaaaaays." Why you gotta remind me that "I'll be loving you until the rainbow burns the stars up in the sky, until the oceans cover the mountains, until dolphins fly and parrots live at sea, until the day that 8 times 8 times 8 is 4, until the earth starts turning right to left, until Dear Mother Nature says her work is through....?" WORRAHECK?!?! That's not fighting fair *rolls eyes*
So with these few points I have made, I hope that I have successfully convinced you and not confused you, that "All Couples should NOT NOW OR EVER have Our Song." Thank you.

*curtsies and twirls back to my seat*

  10. We didn't have a song till the month before the wedding - a friend suggested you and i by john legend and oh boy did it resonate and stick with us. Its our ringtones for ourselves even after the wedding. I noticed we never have quarrels over the phone anymore.

As for picking an our song pre engagement, its risky because if there is a break up like you said, sour grapes.

  11. Ugh, my long comment disappeared. We don't have a song. We picked one Enrique Iglesias song one day and on the wedding day, I remember thinking how long the song was and wondering why on earth did I not pick a Naija song to dance to?
