My Favorite Songs from the Beyonce Lion King:The Gift Album

The Lion King: The Gift Album curated by Beyonce was released on July 19, 2019 to a lot of buzz and excitement. As an African, I was even more thrilled because the album featured quite a number of songs from multiple Nigerian artists. I literally shouted, "Enh? Enh? Enh?" with every Nigerian artist's name that was purported to be on the album. I was a little surprised that Davido wasn't included, but that's my own palava, as I prefer him to Wizkid (not that anybody cares). Anyway, I wanted to share the songs that I have been enjoying from the album, and I hope you let me know which ones you like as well.

DON'T JEALOUS ME: Tekno, Yemi Alade, Mr Eazi
This song by Tekno, Yemi Alade, and Mr Eazi issa jam and makes me want to dance! It might actually be my favorite song from the album.

JA ARA E: Burna Boy
I know I've never really said it but I REALLY REALLY like Burna Boy's songs. From 8 years ago when I first moved to Lagos and he was still with Aristokrat Records (which is owned by an old friend of mine, btw), I liked the vibes of a lot of his songs. I may not dig his personality (I really don't) but he's very talented and I love this song!

ALREADYBeyoncé · Shatta Wale · Major Lazer
I like how easy this song is. It makes me want to sway my hips and smile flirtatiously at my imaginary audience, LOL!

BIGGER: Beyonce
If I like, I can hate on Beyonce from today until infinity, this song is powerful and speaks to me! I was someone who used to be the biggest Beyonce fan, and then became very annoyed by her (Beyhive people, free me). I just have this love/uninterested relationship with her. But she's an icon, no matter what anybody says. Just not as big an icon as Michael Jackson, because that was my uncle right there.

Anyway, I love the lyrics of this song.

MY POWER: Tierra Whack, Beyoncé, Moonchild Sanelly
Choiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! I want to work out while listening to this song! Straight fire!

WATER: Beyonce, Salatiel, Pharrel Williams
I'm not sure why this song doesn't seem as popular as the other songs. I love it!

BROWN SKIN GIRL: Beyonce, SAINt JHN, WizKid
To be really honest, I like Brown Skin Girl, but not as much as these other songs I posted above. I keep singing the refrain though, so something about the song catches my interest. There is currently some kind of argument going on about whether the song is meant to highlight or lift up all shades of brown skin girls, or the darker-skinned females. In my opinion, it's for all shades of brown skin - I can sing the song and feel empowered, and my half Guatemalan-half Nigerian cousin can sing it too and feel great. What do you think about it?

I just want to say thank you Beyonce. Thank you Disney. Thank you Africa. I am so proud to be an African woman!!!!

What are your favorite songs from this album? Have you seen The Lion King yet?

  1. This album is everything! I am really loving who Beyoncé has become. But I agree, her Beyhive people are so annoying! My faves are Brown Skin Girl, Already and the Burna Boy jam! Have you seen the movie yet? It's so worth it!

    1. My sister saw the movie and said it was just there. I'm not sure about Beyonce as an actress so I might wait until it's on TV before watching it.

  3. Hey Berry! I am yet to see the Lion King movie but hoping that I can create some "me-time" this week to watch it. By the way, you inspired me to launch a blog reader survey. I am so nervous about it, having procrastinated on it for like months ever since the new year but I am finally eager to see what type of responses that I get and how many of them. Cheers! - www.jamilakyari.com

    1. Oh yay!!! I need to come and answer the survey if it's still up. You learn a lot from and about your audience that way.
