The Balancing Act of Life

Hello, and Happy Monday to ya!

How was your weekend? I hope you enjoyed it. Can I be really honest with you guys? I almost didn't have a post for you today. For the past 2 months, most of my posts have been ready in advance, and scheduled to drop at 12am Atlanta time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I had a surge or burst of creativity and content at the end of last year through the beginning of this year, and I had two months worth of content to post. And to be honest, I have more content planned for March, but the actual writing of the posts seem to have gotten away from me. Why? Because of Life's Balancing Act.

A few months ago, this lady I follow on Instagram (@ChinnyCo) mentioned the concept she'd read about from Randi Zuckerberg's "Pick Three: You Can Have It All (Just Not Every Day). The premise is that the facets of life - Work, Sleep, Family, Friends, and Fitness - are things we all want to have and do very well. Randi believes that we can have all of them, just not at the same time. She believes that we can do at most, 3 of them at a time, and in order to have a well-balanced life, rotate which three you're paying attention to. For instance, you may have a few weeks where you're pouring into your Family, Work, and Friends - during this time, you might be lacking or struggling with your Fitness or Sleep. The next few weeks, you may take a step back from your Friends or Work, so you have more time to devote to Fitness or catching up on your Zzz's.

I think I quite agree, although I'm not sure I would limit life to just those 5 options. I think that if you're giving one thing a lot of focus in your life, you're sacrificing something else that you may also like to focus on. For instance, I set a goal to read 2 books a month, and in January I read 4 or 5 books (see my January Life Lately post). The time I spent reading could have been devoted instead to filming and editing Youtube videos (see my channel), or taking a Clever Girl Finance course. One thing I never did was read instead of spending time or playing with Cocoa. It all boils down to your priorities and what is most important to you. I've tried to find an approach to personal time management that works for me - I have one in theory, but implementing it has been tough. Once I find a routine that is marginally successful for me, I'll share it with you.

In summary, life is a balancing act. With good intentions, we may want it all. However, the reality is that some things have to take a back seat at different points in time. I'd like to hear what you think about it, and how you [try to] balance your life.

  1. I am in total agreement with this. Haven’t found a way that works yet. I just re-structure when I feel something is suffering gravely. Like you, the kids hardly ever get out of my picture.

    1. It's hard to find something that works effectively. But maybe it's really structuring, and restructuring as time goes on.

  2. Honestly, this is a struggle for me. I currently got a new job about 2 weeks ago and the schedule is crazy! I sometimes work outside of work hours so right now my blog + YouTube suffers.

For book reading, I have only read 2 books this year (currently reading my second) and I feel the only time I can create to reading is while in traffic but then, sometimes I really just want to have alone time. It is tough.

    1. Ooooh, well congratulations on the new job! I hope it's something that you enjoy doing, and also pays sensibly!

I get wanting to read while alone - it helps with concentration.
