Ringling Brothers Circus

The first time I went to a circus was when I was about 7 years old. I can't actually remember what age I was but I was pretty young. I vividly remember one of the acts coming out looking like a lion, but it turned out to be two people. I asked my mum and she said it was a Russian circus that toured at the time, and we attended the showing in Port Harcourt. Just FYI, Port Harcourt used to be a very bubbling town with lots of cool and artsy events. If it wasn't for the security situation, I know PH would have been as good as, if not better than Lagos.

Anyways, when I heard that The Ringling Brothers Circus was coming to Atlanta, I quickly sent a message to our family chat on Whatsapp  to see who would be interested. Everyone was, and we talked about going together as one group. Before we got a chance to buy tickets, Ringling Brothers announced that this is their final year touring! This is a company that has been in existence since 1871! They said that ticket sales have been declining over the years, and after taking elephants out of the act, the sales declined even further. A lot of animal rights groups are against using animals in entertainment, and this clearly affected the business.

As sad as I am to see this circus shut down, rendering hundreds of employees basically without jobs, I was glad we had the opportunity to witness the show. I posted photos and videos on Snapchat throughout the show, and I can say I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I wish the photos we took with the camera were better, but they're better than nothing, aye?

Going to the circus really brought back a lot of childhood memories for me. Have you ever been to a circus? I mean a real circus, not like Cirque du Soleil - which I have also been to.

  1. I've never been to the circus - just Cirque du Soleil (which I LOVED) - but I would love to go at least once. That's sad that they will no longer tour, Ringling Bros is like a cultural instituation.

    1. It IS a cultural institution isn't it? I saw a commercial for the Universoul Circus though, so that might be a good alternative.

  2. I was just in Atlanta last week and we almost went to see the show on Sunday too! I was too tired after church and wanted to vacation-veg-out for a bit. We were trying to catch the show for the same reason, especially since I've never been to a circus before. That's too bad they're closing down. The same thing is happening to other organizations like Sea World.

    1. You came to Atlanta and didn't look for me?!?!?!?!?!? Just kidding.

Yeah, I heard about Sea World and Shamu. :(

  3. Noice in Key and Peele's voice. I have never been to a circus. It sure looks like fun.

I can't say I am beaten up over the fact that it is closing. I have read articles on the level of cruelty that goes into training those poor animals, so I am not here for it. Nah to go find another hustle for those poor people. I hope the acts can transition into something in the creative field as well.

    1. This is why I don't read such articles and watch such videos. Not to say that ignorance is bliss, but...
