On Hair Removal

While I was in Abuja a few weeks ago, I called up my friend's body treatment specialist. I'm calling her a body treatment specialist because I'm not sure what to call her. She does henna, body scrubs and as you've guessed from the post topic, hair removal. My friend who recommended her usually gets a complete body hair removal - bikini/Brazilian wax, legs, arms, etc. I had never thought about waxing until I saw a sugar wax demonstration on  Instagram. I thought it looked really cool and I decided I would try for a leg, armpit and bikini wax. So, when I got to Abuja, I called up Madam Aisha (08135353132 or 08051446483) and booked my appointment.

When she got to the hotel, I boiled some water for her to add to the sugar to get it ready. When it was time, I sat down and got ready to start the waxing on my legs, then armpits, and finally the bikini area. She slathered the sugar wax on a part of my leg, and then she let it rip...

OHHHHHHH

MYYYYYYYYYY

GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!

Why in the fudge muffin was she hurting my life?!?!?!?!?!?! What did I do to my friend that she would recommend this kind of torture on my physical being?!

I couldn't believe the pain! I have a VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY low threshold for pain, but I really didn't think it would hurt that much. I thought maybe only the first rip would hurt and I would get used to it - NOPE! Every single strand of hair that came off HURT MY HEART! Geez! You guys that get waxes, what kind of numb bodies do you have?!?!?!

It must have taken us 20+ minutes to get my legs (knees to ankles) waxed because I kept begging her to stop. Even doing the armpits was painful too. Of course there was no way I was letting her near my goodies

NAH MEHN, WE AIN'T INTERESTED,
STAY AWAY FROM MY VAJAYJAY!!!

Please give me my shaving stick and/or hair removal cream. This waxing business is NOT for Berry Dakara.

  5. LMAOOOO
You should have done the bikini wax first since it's the hardest part lol :p
Pele. I tried waxing once. I have a high threshold for pain (the exception for needles) but despite the fact that my waxing appointment was as sterile/ formal as a dentist appointment, and they used cold cream to soothe after, I still broke out in a rash. A very bad reaction. Stayed away since then but I may just try it again

Wax + rash though? Nope. I don't know why you would want to try again.

  9. Thank you,Berry for taking one for the team! I've added you to the list of people I trust to define pain!
Some people can bear it. I can't. I have very very low threshold for pain. With this post, I'll steer my curiosity away from the waxing department, thank you very much.

    1. Mine grew back in 2 weeks, plus there was a little abrasion to a part of my leg from the waxing, so I'm definitely afraid to try again

    2. it's supposed to last at least 4 weeks. i dont know how they do it in naij but i hear they use strips which is more painful. but you grow less and less hair the more you do it.

  11. Hehhehe! Looks like you had the traditional Hausa wax (Halawa) not for the faint hearted! I've actually seen someone bleed from the pain.

    1. OMGoodness, that sounds scary then. I know Indians/Middle Easterners have the hair removal thing down. I'd think the Northerners use similar methods. I have a fairly high pain tolerance threshold but still...this sounds...I don't even know.

  12. hair really annoys me so i take it off when i can. i have been a loyal customer to waxing for about 8 years or so. it still hurts but its worth it.

  14. Sounds different from the Arab sugaring method. There is absolutely no ripping and the pain is bearable. It feels like tiny pinpricks all over the body. And if you are waxing the veejayjay, you need to trim the hair to a quarter of an inch before even attempting it. I used to get a full body wax (EVERYTHING) done about once a month when I lived in the Middle East. I miss that and the hammams. Pele.

I'm actually laughing out loud at the office. This is so funny. I am too scared to try waxing. I'll just stick to my Veet jejeli.
My sister tried it and the pain she was in put me off completely. You tried that you finished your legs and even did armpit. My sister did 1 leg and walked out. lol.

  21. Ahn Berry its not that bad truly. I have been waxing for the last 10 years- its neater and quicker so long as you don't react to the wax. I wax about once in 5 weeks - but you always have to make sure they do the bikini first...and then all other parts. It gets more tolerable with time..for me it trunps shaving and the reactions from hair removal cream. Better luck next time.

  22. The rate at which my body hair grown ehn, I better not try waxing cos it means I will be waxing every week, and that is constant torture. Even that stupid no-no permanent laser hair remover never worked for me, even after a year. I have never waxed, and don't I will ever try it.

  24. Hi Berry, first time waxing is the most painful and after a while it gets less painful. And ladies I do my Hollywood waxing, under arm, facials and other parts of my body myself. Because I like feeling and looking silky smooth. But a big advice, never use sugar wax cos it's the most painful. Try hard wax such as Lycon wax which protects you skin from post wax irritation and is more gentle which means less and endurable pain. And always trim your hair before you wax cos the longer your hair the more painful it is to wax.
