Something's been on my mind for a few days now. What happens to the ring when an engagement is called off?

- She cheated
- She called off the relationship because she had cold feet, had a spiritual awakening, or something along those lines. If she breaks up with him because HE cheated, she gets to keep the ring.

Hmm I'm not sure what to vote. I will say the man but not for d reason given in d option. D ring is a symbol of a promise of marriage given to the woman by the man. Where that promise is broken, what right has the woman to hold on to the ring? Legally, under common law, d ring is to be returned to d man. I think. Hmm lemme go dust off my family law textbooks
ReplyDeleteIn my book, it's a present given because the guy loves her so much and wants to marry her. And etiquette rules say it's rude to return presents.
DeleteOkay, that's a big big lie
Please, give the man his ring back, no matter the situation. Its a symbol for something from him to you. When that something no longer exists, give him back. Why would you want to keep a ring that symbolises something that no longer exists? You want to sell it, and spend the money?
ReplyDeleteWhen my cousin's ex broke off an engagement, she even mailed the ring to him, all the way from Nigeria to London.
LOLLL!! She mailed the ring!
DeleteHahaha! I like that. That lady is a stickler
DeleteLooooooooooooool!!! Your cousin is tough!
DeleteNo. Actually, its the guy that is my cousin. The girl broke off the engagement, and then sent the ring back to him (my cousin). My own cousin was heartbroken, lol.
DeleteI voted it depends cos I think it depends but personally, I think I'd return it. God forbid it happens to me though.
ReplyDeleteSome women keep it and melt it down to make something else. Or they sell it and use the money for whatever they want. Oooh, imagine going to sell your ring and the store tells you it was CZ, not a diamond. Hahahaha.
Deletena wa ooo this one go hard sha but i think it depends on how the engagement is called off... but honestly speaking why would the guy want it back its not just a gift.. its a symbol that the person means something to you and she should be able to decide what she wants to do with it abi...?
ReplyDeleteSome guys would want it back, so they can get their money back. If there's a breakup, I doubt they're remembering that the lady meant something at some point.
DeleteI would return the ring. Mail it across seven seas and seven mountains if I had to. No matter the reason for the break up, I wouldn't want to keep something that would remind me of the relationship we had. In my opinion, that's holding on to the past. I can't start a new chapter of my life if I keep re-reading the previous one.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good way to look at it.
DeleteMehn I'll sell that ring and go shopping return for what! In the economical climate?! No way!!!!
ReplyDeleteI so agree Tolulope! Lol
Deletehow do i view the results of the poll please? :)
ReplyDeleteI don't knowwwwwwwwww :(((((
DeleteI've tried and I cahn't see it
I say it depends. Esp on the amount of the ring. If I know it cost more than a certain amount, I would return it. I dont need anybody thinking my new clothes/car/house/phone is money from their foolish ring. :p loool! I'll return it no matter what. Can't keep that kind of gift.
ReplyDeleteHaha!
DeleteFor me , it would very much depend on d ring.... If its expensive, boy sorry I'm soo keeping it to sell or melt! #afterall its my gift innit!#
ReplyDeleteIf na aboki ring nko, Kuku fly it from 3rmld mainland bridge :p. Jst saying. LOL
