My Word for 2019

The very first time I ever posted my Word Of the Year was in 201*. I can't remember where I saw the trend - most likely from other blogs I followed and my interest was piqued. Again, just like New Year resolutions and Goals, a lot of people find them to be cliche. That's their prerogative - everything is not for everyone. But I like the idea of being guided by a word or phrase. It influences your thoughts, and therefore your actions.

For the past year and half, it seems like my life has been in limbo. I have been stuck - not able to move at all. My personal life was the most greatly affected, and caused the loss of my creativity. My career was also stagnant - I was in a job that I really didn't like and couldn't seem to escape.

In a word, my life just felt STUCK!

And that's why this year, I have decided that the word for me is ONWARD. Onward because it is time for me to move forward with my life. Onward, because I am also looking for an upward movement in all areas of my life. I cannot and will no longer allow anything, anyone or my present circumstances to hold me back, or keep me hanging. Unless God tells me to wait - which He has on different parts of my life at different times - I WILL move onward. Barring God's direction to stand still, I am determined to move ONWARD, in a CONTINUING forward and upward direction with my life.

Do you have a Word of the Year? Care to share what it is, and why you came up with it?

  1. Hi Berry - love the meaning behind onward. My mantra for the year ( not word for the year), is "if God is not done working, then I'm not done waiting". It is gotten from Hillsong's Season and It's just going to serve as a daily reminder of God's promise to me especially for times when I want to give up.

    1. Oooh, I love that mantra. I think I heard the song recently because it sounds vaguely familiar. I know I heard something in the past few days that was along the lines of "If it isn't good, then God has not finished yet." We all definitely need that daily reminder, especially on the dark days when we can't seem to go on. Our hope remains on Jesus, right?

      Thanks for commenting!!

  2. Awww I really love that word "Onward". That's lowkey one of the most valuable lessons I have learned so far. That no matter what, you keep it moving. Slow down if you must, but keep it moving. And even when we are waiting on God, God still wants us to actively wait, not passively. He isn't asking that we sit with our legs crossed and page through a magazine. He wants us be expectant, while we wait.
Did you do a blog makeover? I love the new layout.
Also, my word for this year is Restoration. I lost a lot last year, mostly time. I want all of those restored back to me in thousands. Every single thing I lost. Hehe. Happy to see that unfold this year. And all the best with your year, Berry.

    1. Hi Ufuoma. I really like the word, too. I thought about Forward, but something was missing.

I haven't done much with the layout in a while - I'm actually looking to redo it soon, but glad you like it.

Restoration was my word for last year. At the end of the year, when I thought about how 2018 went, the area of my life where I wanted restoration was different from what God planned to restore. I wanted some of my things back, but He wanted my heart to be restored. I pray that God restores all that He has planned for you.

      God bless!!!

  3. Hi Berry.

It's been ages. I love your word for the year. I can totally relate with feeling stuck. So yes ONWARD you go. My word for tHe year is UNLIMITED. I didn't come up with it though. It was the word on 31st Passover service but it feels just right and speaks to me because I tend to limit myself alot. I tend to shy away from things, doubting myself and my abilities, limiting myself on different accounts. Not anymore. This year is definitely going to be different for me. I am UNLIMITED!

    1. HI Grace!!! Long time indeed.

UNLIMITED is a great word too. I also limit myself a lot, so I definitely understand wanting to remove the doubts that are self-imposed. I wish you all the best!

  4. I think mine would be "intentional".

While life is basically one big illusion of control, I'd like to feel like I play some part in things I want and things I do not like and would like to change. So being intentional i.e putting effort and taking action and letting the universe/God do the rest.

    1. Oh yes, we all have to play our parts in life. God knows everything that will happen, and yet we have free will to do what we can. Cheers to an Intentional year for you!

    2. Intentional is also my word for the year. I spent a lot of time last year doing everything. I want to be more intentional this year, hoping things falls into place.

    3. Hey Abiola. Sometimes I feel the same way too - like being constantly busy and doing things almost mindlessly. I pray we're more intentional this year with everything we do!
