BERRY VLOG: Social Media Envy
In my Lovely Links last week, I posted an article that showed ways to deal with internet jealousy. Before I found that article though, my sister and I recorded a video where we discussed social media envy and how we both deal with it. It's a little long but I think it's worth watching and I'd love to hear or read your views on the subject. If you've had social media envy, what caused it and how did you get over it? If you've never been jealous of anyone online, how did you manage to avoid it at all?

Social media envy is so real!! When you're constantly being shown how everybody else's life seem to be more interesting than yours it's only a matter of time that you start to feel some kind of way.
ReplyDeleteI avoid this by not spending as much time on instagram majorly and remind myself that it's all just the good parts that everyone shows. There always a bts that we don't get to see because maybe it's as ugly as ours.

GBAM! Everything you said! Stuff like this creeps up on you slowly, so we really have to make sure we have an adequate balance and not mismanage or misuse social media. There's definitely a BTS that's not always as glamorous or fun as we think.
DeleteI don't think I have social media envy. In general, I don't think I envy or get jealous of people. Occasionally, I'd hope that I'd have/achieve something they do/have, but it's more like an "I will get there one day", or "It will be nice to get there one day", so more like an aspiration that I feel is achievable, as opposed to "I wish I was there right now - their life is so great!".
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, what I have with some people is what I would call Social media confusion. Maybe with some bloggers I follow. I see them in a new outfit ALL of the time. As in, they post several times a week, and they have done this for years, yet hardly anything is “re-rocked”. Hian! That one confuses me, because I honestly feel for them and wonder what would drive anyone to fall victim to that level of consumerism. I mean, their pocket, their business... but I still feel it’s abnormal to spend excessively in such a manner, and the condition probably needs a diagnosis of its own.
By the way, your sister’s facial expressions/ mannerisms remind me so much of this girl (wj539) on youtube :) https://www.youtube.com/user/wj539/videos
Adaugo, thank God you're not prone to envy. A lot of people couldn't say the same thing.
DeleteOn the fashion bloggers, I used to wonder the same thing too. Like "what jobs do they have that they can afford to shop so much?!" But what I learned is that a lot of them get free clothes, especially the popular ones. That being said, I think that perpetuating the lifestyle that doesn't allow for re-rocking is not the best. I won't knock them, but it's certainly not my thing.
I'll check out wj539 to see!
Adaugo, i wondered as well! But about from getting free clothes, they tend to sell a lot of their old clothes... sometimes even when they've worn it only once, and they buy new ones!
DeleteOk so I have been dealing with this for a while now. I have deactivated my Facebook account several times and that's the only social media platform I follow . Funny I have always envied your relationship with cakes. I am also married but a lot has happened in that period
ReplyDeleteYou both sound alike! She speaks so well too - I want that :(
ReplyDeleteDoes this count as social media envy too? Lolol

How to figure out and define your personal style
Haha, my other sister sounds more like me actually. Nope, doesn't count :p
DeleteAND YES, YOU'RE SO PREETTTYYYYYYYYY TAMMY (?)
ReplyDeleteShe said THAAAAAAAAANKS! Thank God someone else is telling her
Deleteberry your brother is cuuuuute!
ReplyDeleteI love the honesty of this vlog, its refreshing. I think everyone who is active on social media has experienced this at some point, except if they are in denial, lol. I feel whatever emotion one experiences is fine but its what you do with/after feeling that emotion that really matters and importantly not letting it rule over one's life. I always compliment things I see in others that I wish I had and that turns the feeling around to a good thing. You and your sister are too cute:-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Titi. You're absolutely right that what matters is what you do about your feelings. Ideally we shouldn't let emotions rule our lives, right?
DeleteI like your strategy of complimenting!
Thanks
I commented while I was still watching lol. This message is for your sister Tammy. I know exactly how you feel, I felt that way for most of my teen years and 20's and if I could go back I would love my body even without the curves and enjoy the fact that I could eat anything and not gain a pound back then, lol. I was so desperate for curves, lol. It took me having 2 kids, stretch mark and all and in my 30s to love what I see in the mirror and I embrace it and it has changed my life. You are gorgeous and clearly those guys are blind mehn, lol They will now be chasing you later in life, their loss though. Walk in your greatness within and outside!
ReplyDeletePREACH IT SISTER GURL!
DeleteI try to focus more on creating content rather than stalking social media. That way I don't get to see things that may make me start to compare and possibly get jealous.
ReplyDeleteAlso I re-evaluate my goals and if I am meeting them, then I am good.
Comparison is a killer of joy so we should avoid that as much as we can.

I like social media so I don't see myself staying off completely. It's really just a matter of knowing how much is too much and what effect it's having on you. I think it's awesome that you are essentially competing with yourself and striving for better by reevaluating goals consistently.
