On Nigerian Fashion Collections by Season

Hey friends,

I was just on Bella Naija, and there was an article of another designer posting a lookbook from their new collection. As you know, fashion houses typically make collections by seasons - Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. Most, if not all Nigerian designers follow this schedule as well. But on most of those posts, readers leave comments asking...

"Which one is Winter collection? Do we have winter in Nigeria?"
"What is Summer? It's always Summer in Naija jo!!!"

So here's what I'm thinking - would it be totally crazy to have Nigerian seasons dictate collections made specifically for the Nigerian climate? See examples below...

"Introducing the new 'Jules by Berry' RAIN 2014 collection?"
"Have you seen 'Berry Bridals' 2015 DRY collection?"
"Oh boy, DakBerry's HARMATTAN 2013 collection is too cool for school!"

Lol, yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah. It doesn't quite roll off the tongue very nicely.

What do you think?

  2. LOL. DRY season. Do we have Monsoon? That sounds fancier. My own thing is that as much as I LOVE fashion, it feels like we've been inundated with collection after collection for a few weeks - some of them have great and some pretty meh to say the least. How many fashion weeks did Naija do?????

    1. Monsoon does sound fancy, but I don't think it's quite apt.

Lol, I know of only 1 fashion week here - Lagos Fashion and Design Week. Although it's possible there were other ones I didn't pay attention to. There are bunches of fashion weeks all over the world though. BUNCHES!

  3. Agreed! I would love to see a harmattan collection!
Come to think of it...many other designers from the middle east ( I love lebanese designers) do that whole fall//winter collection as well. e.g. Elie Saab. Looks like we just view europe as our center of fashion no matter where we're located

    1. Harmattan has a nice ring to it, and we can have the heavier materials featured. I saw this post on Wikipedia about Fashion Week - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion_week

  6. loool! I've thought of the titles too. And I'm pretty sure I'm likely to be one of those that made the comment -'' 'Which one is Winter collection? Do we have winter in Nigeria?' "
"What is Summer? It's always Summer in Naija jo!!!"Why deceive ourselves? Wetin concern us with spring/winter/summer collection for Naija. Like, why can't our movie industry be called something not so similar to Hollywood?!

  7. LOL....i know this same thought has crossed my mind some time ago :-D
I think the reason why Nigerian designers make collections by same seasons abroad is probably because they have plans to cater for the international market in future. JBL, LDA, CLAN, etc are all recognized internationally now; So young designers follow suit with the hope of breaking into the int'l scene. And if you want to make money all year round internationally, you best be making your collection with their climate in mind...lol.

That said , i love the sound of RAIN & HARMATTAN collection.
