Telling My Grandmother About My Divorce

I promise I'm not going to write only about my divorce on this blog. As a matter of fact, I get tired of the topic - as if I don't have other things on my mind. But I shared this on Threads the other day, and I thought it might make for a good blog post too!

So after years of keeping the news of my divorce from my very traditional/conservative 88-year old grandmother, we (that is, my mom and I) finally told her last week!

The back story is my grandma is very feisty and steadfast to her ideals, and we've kinda butted heads over the years...

• She wasn't pleased that my younger sister got married before I did
• She couldn't understand why I was 30 and unmarried (for context, she got married VERY young)
• When I did get married, she didn't get why we wanted to wait a year before trying for children
• While TTC, she'd go to her prayer place and ask them to pray for me, then ask me to reimburse her offering, which I was not inclined to do...
• When my daughter was a toddler, my grandma and I disagreed about bedtime routines.

Anyway, I'd chosen not to tell her about the divorce because

1. She was in Nigeria and I'm in the US, so it was easy
2. I didn't want her to lecture me...

But now she's here in the US and in our house, so it was a matter of time before it would come up. It didn't even take 24 hours before she asked, "How is your husband?"

My mom replied "Mama, she and her husband said they're not marrying again o."

Grandma: "Enh?! Come here!"

Me: "Yes Mama?"

Grandma: "You're not married again? Since when?"

Me: "Yes Mama. 2.5 years now."

Grandma: "Eziokwu! And I've been praying for two of you to have another child all this while."

Me: "Oops!"

Fast forward to my sister coming over to see our grandma. She exclaims to my sister that NOBODY told her that I got divorced. But anyway, it's okay because she will now shift the focus of her prayers for me to find a new husband.

😂😂😂😂😂

In retrospect, maybe I should have told her much earlier because God might have already answered her prayer by now!
